How Does Leadership Coaching Work?
The Coaching Engagement Process Is:
- Assessment: Gathering data about the client’s strengths, weaknesses, goals, and concerns. This may include formal and informal questionnaires and assessment tools.
- Goal Setting: Clients know themselves best but they may not know how to reach their goals or what obstacles are in the way. A coaching conversation involves identifying the goals and setting a visible target which is measured in each session and at the end of the coaching package.
- Coaching Sessions: During the coaching sessions, clients experience a variety of modalities selected specifically for their particular goals and the capacity of their nervous systems. Modalities include somatics (body sensation recognition), emotional regulation, strategic planning, thinking patterns, habit patterning, role play, visualization, and breathing exercises.
- Feedback and Reflection: Individual feedback is collected at each session. Group sessions to discuss what has been learned can be scheduled for a group of managers who are all participating in individual coaching sessions. Feedback on how coaching has affected solidifying training goals can also be solicited orally and via surveys.
- Action Planning: The coach assists the client to set actionable goals and finding out what obstacles may affect goal achievement. The process is experimental and responsive to each client’s capacity at different stages in the actioning process.
- Follow-Up: Follow-up sessions may be held on a quarterly or one-off basis per agreement.
What Skills Are Taught Through Leadership Coaching?
Leadership Coaching Typically Develops:
- Communication Skills: Developing better articulation of ideas, active listening, and meaningful dialogue with team members.
- Emotional Intelligence: Enhancement in self-awareness, self-regulation, empathy, and social skills toward building better relations and emotional management.
- Decision-Making: Developing the ability to make informed and timely decisions that will have an immediate or long-term impact.
- Conflict Resolution: Learn how conflicts can be effectively addressed and resolved to promote a healthy working environment.
- Strategic Thinking: Learn to think critically, plan strategically, and adjust to respond to unexpected events or evolving challenges and opportunities.
- Delegation: The ability to delegate requires personal detachment from self and focus on building capacity in others. A system of delegation helps reduce anxiety over loss of control and builds bridges to identify that involve resourcing others to do their jobs.
- Change Management: Acquiring skills to lead and manage change processes understands that resistance is necessary to the building of commitment. It uses individual and team existing abilities to build flexibility and resilience.
- Team Building: When you can inspire, build trust, and facilitate collaboration among members to achieve desired goals, team morale increases, and latent individual skills are discovered.
What Are the Benefits of Leadership Coaching?
The benefits of leadership coaching do not stop at the person being coached but extend to the organization itself, which include:
- Improved Performance: Better leadership skills are the result of better decision-making, higher productivity, and high overall performance.
- More Self-Awareness: A sought-after leadership skill, often identified as lacking in managers, is the ability to recognize one’s own tendencies, qualities, blindspots, and drivers and to adjust accordingly within a variety of contexts.
- Better Communication: Effective communication builds relationships for better teams and improves conflict resolution within teams.
- More Confidence: Leaders exude confidence as they learn to take charge, make decisions, build trust, and set boundaries.
- Career Growth: Leadership skills are key to competitive advantage both personally and organizationally.
- Improved Team Dynamic: With better leaders, a more united and engaged workforce improves employee retention and increases workplace satisfaction and morale.
- Organization Advancement: Leaders drive organizational success by inspiring a vision, and engaging teams with strategic goals that are realistic and ideal. At the same time, organizations advance through fostering a culture of learning, encouragement, and continuous improvement.
